With the unanimous approval by the Collier County Board of County Commissioners yesterday, the development of a new, affordable housing community in Immokalee, Florida, which could ultimately lead to the creation of 179 rental single-family homes and townhomes, has begun in the rural farm-working community. Immokalee, located 40 miles from Naples in southwest Florida, has more than 42 percent of its population living in poverty, with many residents, including families, currently residing in substandard housing.
